At first glance, NGC 4753 seems to be a fairly normal type S0 galaxy; it is dominated by old stars and there seems to be no star formation. In truth, this galaxy in the constellation Virgo is far from usual. Astronomers have classified it as a peculiar galaxy, because, were it not for some strange, crucial feature, it would fall into one of the normal classifications.
Normal S0 galaxies contain little or no gas or dust, but NGC 4753 has a complex pattern of crisscrossing dust lanes. It is not clear what might have caused these chaotic patterns of dust. Perhaps the galaxy has attracted extra mass, which has warped the gravitational field, causing NGC 4753 to wobble or ΓÇ£precess.ΓÇ¥
